PROVENANCE
Willy Peploe (the artist's eldest son).  Thence by descent to the current owner.

With the Levevre Gallery label verso, no. 4636.3.

Guy Peploe explains his grandfather's approach to still-life painting at the end of his career as 'the atmosphere is created closer to the domestic nihilism of Walter Sickert' (SJ Peploe, Mainstream Publishing, London and Edinburgh, 2000, p.67). This work is similar in both style and subject-matter to two other late oils, both in the Aberdeen Art Gallery collection: Still-life with Chops (c1931), and Tulips in a Brown Jar (c1933).
